Juan de Dios Mateos was a member of Opéra Studio at Opéra National in Paris from 2016 to 2018, being involved in many projects, including Les Fêtes d’Hébè, Owen Wingrave, Bastien et Bastienne, Reigen and The Little Match Girl Passion. Since then he has trod the boards of some of the world’s leading theatres as Gran Teatre del Liceu, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera Australia in Sydney and in Melbourne, Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, Teatro Massimo Bellini di Catania, Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, standing out in belcano and Mozart repertoire with such opera as Il barbiere di Siviglia, L’elisir d’amore, La Cenerentola, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, Il turco in Italia, not forgetting the Spanish repertoire: El Caballero de Olmedo, La Dolores, La Araucana, Luisa Fernanda.
Highlights of his career include Conte di Almavia in Il barbiere di Siviglia at Deutsche Oper Berlin and at Den Norske Opera in Oslo, Cavalier Belfiore in Il viaggio a Reims at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and in Australia (Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Arts Centre), Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at Sydney Opera House and at Opera de Oviedo, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at Teatro Petruzzelli di Bari, Lindoro ne L’italiana in Algeri at Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, Il conte di Libenskof in Il viaggio a Reims at Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Born in Almería, he began his musical career as a flutist, earning his ‘Grado Profesional’ degree in transverse flute at the Conservatory of his city, while he began studying singing privately with Coral Morales and Carlos Aransay, also participating in Masterclasses with Raina Kabaivanska, Roberto Scandiuzzi, Hedwig Fassbender, Ildar Abdrazakov, Luciana d’Intino, David Menéndez, Raúl Giménez and Jaume Aragall, among others.
He has distinguished himself in several international singing competitions: in 2019 winner of prizes “Plácido Domingo” and “Fundación Ferrer-Salat” at 56th Tenor Viñas International Competition, in 2017 second prize at “Hariclea Darclée” International Competition in Romania, nel 2023 Audience Prize at the Concurso Internacional de Canto Lírico de Lousada.
