Born in Dresden, Michael Güttler began his international career by conducting Parsifal several times at Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, until he became a guest conductor at many of the world’s leading theatres and orchestras, including La Scala in Milan where he made his debut in 2023 with Salome.
Some of the most important theatres he has conducted at include Opera National de Paris, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro Real de Madrid, Washington National Opera, New National Theatre in Tokyo, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos Lisbon, Prague State Opera, Glyndebourne Festival. Orchestras include the Israel Philharmonic, Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Stockholm Radio Orchestra.
Particularly noteworthy is his collaboration with the Vienna State Opera, where since the 2010 season he has been conducting an extremely wide repertoire, including Rigoletto, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, Ariadne auf Naxos, Nabucco, Werther, Eugeni Onegin, Boris Godunov, Khovanshchina, Lohengrin, and he also conducted the Vienna State Opera’s historic first performance in Switzerland, (Geneva), with Don Giovanni in December 2019, acclaimed by the press and the public.
From 2003 to 2017, he was a regular guest conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, where he directed the Wagner’s Ring, Tristan und Isolde, Lohengrin, Der fliegende Hollände, Falstaff, Don Carlo, Aida, Trittico di Puccini, La traviata, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Ariadne auf Naxos, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten, Lucia di Lammermoor. He was nominated several times for the Russian theatre prize “Golden Mask” as best conductor.
Until 2017, he was also Principal Conductor at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki.
He studied at the ‘Carl Maria von Weber’ Academy of Music under Prof. Siegfried Kurz, took part in masterclasses with Leonard Bernstein, Sergiu Celibidache, Ilya Musin, Valery Gergiev, was included in the support programme of the “Conductors’ Forum” of the German Music Council, and distinguished himself in several international conducting competitions, including the European Community Conducting Competition “Franco Capuana”.
