Recognized worldwide as one of the leading Verdi mezzo-sopranos, Marianne Cornetti has appeared as Amneris in Aida, Azucena in Il trovatore and Principessa di Eboli in Don Carlos at such theaters as Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera of New York, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper of Munich, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Theatre Royale de la Monnaie de Bruxelles, Maggio Musicale di Firenze, Arena di Verona, Gran Teatre Liceu de Barcelona, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Festival Verdi dek Teatro Regio di Parma, NCPA Beijing, NNT Tokyo.
Other Verdi roles in her repertoire are Preziosilla in La forza del destino, performed also at La Monnaie de Bruxelles and at Liceu de Barcelona; Abigaille in Nabucco, sung at Metrolpolitan Opera and at New National Theatre Tokyo; Lady Macbeth in Macbeth at the Deutsche Oper Berlin; Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera at ROH Covent Garden London and at De Nederlande Opera Amsterdam, , Mrs Quickly in Falstaff at San Diego Opera.
In 2005 she sang her first Wagnerian role, appearing as Ortrud in Lohengrin at Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste. She continued to explore this repertoire with her debut as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. She has since then sung the role of Ortrud in Amsterdam, Paris, and Palermo, and has appeared as Brangäne in Genoa.
Her repertoire also includes roles such as Principessa di Bouillon in Adriana Lecouvreur (Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Regio di Torino, De Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, Opéra de Monte-Carlo), Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana (Teatro alla Scala), Laura in La Gioconda (Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Massimo di Palermo), Ježibaba in Rusalka at Minnesota Opera and Rosa in Cilea’s L’Arlesiana, which she sang to great acclaim at Carnegie Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York under Eve Queler.
She appears frequently in concert in such works as Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Elgar’s Sea Picture and De Falla’s El Amor Brujo. She has recorded Cilea’s L’Arlesiana and Puccini’s Edgar opposite Placido Domingo.
