Born in Catania, Catania, Gianluca Failla began his musical studies as a violist, then graduated in opera singing in 2018 from the Conservatorio “Vincenzo Bellini” in his hometown, with top honors, in the class of tenor Filippo Piccolo. He later specialized with soprano Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz and is currently studying with baritone Roberto de Candia.
Among the most important roles he has already brought to the stage are many Mozartian roles, such as both the title role (Ferrara, Daegu in Korea) and Masetto (Massy, Versailles) in Don Giovanni, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro (Ferrara), but also Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola (Naples), Belcore in L’ elisir d’ amore (Valencia, Naples, Rome), Escamillo in Carmen and Ping in Turandot (Leipzig).
He made his stage debut in 2016 at the Teatro Bellini in Catania with Don Perizonio in Domenico Cimarosa’s L’Impresario in Angustie, and then participated in many productions at his hometown theater: Manon Lescaut, Andrea Chénier, La serva padrona (Uberto), Madama Butterfly, La traviata, and Il barbiere di Siviglia. Also in 2016 he made his debut abroad, in China in Tianjin and Harbin, as Altoum in Turandot. In the following years he took part, in several Chinese cities as Tianjin and Harbin again, but also Xiamen Banlam, Jiangsu and Foshan, in many productions: Don Giovanni (Masetto), Un ballo in maschera, La traviata, Tosca (Sagrestano), Il barbiere di Siviglia, La bohème.
In 2020 he performed, with the Association Opera2001, Masetto in Don Giovanni in various European theaters such as Opera de Massy, Teatro Principal de Zaragoza, Théâtre Montansier in Versailles. In 2021, he debuted the role of Belcore in L’ elisir d’amore for the project “Cuentame una opera” at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, and with the Association “Europa InCanto” at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and at the Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome. In 2022 he debuted the role of Don Magnifico in Rossini’s La Cenerentola in Naples, at the Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome, at the Teatro Rendano in Cosenza, the Teatro Flavio Vespasiano in Rieti, and the Teatro Pergolesi Spontini in Jesi, he was Ping in Turandot at the Musilalische Komödie in Leipzig, and debuted the role of Don Giovanni at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara, where the following year he played the role of Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro. In 2023 he performed the roles of Ben and Mr. Gobineau in Menotti’s The Telephone and The Medium, respectively, in Pavia and Varese, and also the role of Papageno in Die Zauberflöte.
