American baritone Dean Murphy is currently a member of the ensemble at Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he has already been part of many productions, also with leading roles such as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Silvio in Pagliacci, Prince Yeletsky in a new production of The queen of spades, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and Marcello in La bohème.
From 2018 to 2020 he was a member of the International Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zürich, where he appeared as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Schaunard in La bohème, as well as in Barrie Kosky’s new production of Die Gezeichneten, Andreas Homoki’s new production of Sweeney Todd, Christof Loy’s new production of Don Pasquale and Tatjana Gürbaca’s new production of Le Grand Macabre.
Dean Murphy as also been a member of Accademia Rossiniana of Rossini Opera Festival, where he sang as Don Alvaro & Lord Sidney in Il Viaggio a Reims, and he has distinguished himself in several international singing competitions, being a finalist at “Tenor Viñas” Competition in Barcelona (2020) and a finalist at “Moniuszko” Vocal Competition of Polish National Opera (2022).
Highlights of his career are the company debut at Semperoper Dresden as Schaunard in La bohème, his debut in France at Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy and at Opéra de Dijon as Jean in Boesman’s Julie, his debut at Theater an der Wien in the role of Prince Ottokar in Der Freischütz, Frédéric in Lakmé at the Berliner Philharmonie with the Deutsche Oper Berlin Orchestra, his debut in Belgium as Schaunard in La bohème at Opera Vlaanderen, the role of Paolo Orsini in Wagner’s Rienzi at Müpa Budapest under the baton of Marc Albrecht, Carmen at Gstaad Menuhin Festival.
Dean Murphy obtained his Master of Music from Yale School of Music and holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the Hartt School of Music.
