M° Fagen was born in New York, where he attended the Wesleyan University and he began his conducting studies with Laszlo Halasz. Further studies continued at the Curtis Institute under the guidance of Max Rudolf, and both at the Salzburg Mozarteum and with Hans Swarowsky. He has been assistant of both Christoph von Dohnanyi (Frankfurt Opera) and James Levine (Metropolitan Opera).

Arthur Fagen has been the Carl and Sally Gable music director at The Atlanta Opera since 2010, and continues to be much sought-after as a conductor of symphony and opera both in Europe and the United States. His most recent production in Atlanta are Die Walküre, Das Rehingold, Salome Il barbiere di Siviglia, La traviata, Carmen.

He is a regular guest at the most prestigious opera houses, concert halls, and music festivals at home and abroad, and his career has been marked by a string of notable appearances including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Staatsoper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Deutsche Oper Berlin, New York City Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Théâtre du Capitole di Toulouse, Opéra de Bordeaux, Frankfurt Opera, New Israeli Opera of Tel Aviv, Teatro Colón di Buenos Aires.

Arthur Fagen has an opera repertory of more than 70 works and he has served as Principal Conductor in Kassel and Brunswick, as Chief Conductor of the Flanders Opera, as Music Director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra and he has been member of the conducting staff of Chicago Lyric Opera.

From 2002 to 2007, he has been Music Director of the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra and Dortmund Opera. Following his successful concerts with the Dortmund Philharmonic at the Festspielhaus in Salzburg, Arthur Fagen was invited to Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Palais de Beaux Arts in Brussels; he also was on tour with the orchestra in China (Beijing and Shanghai).

On the concert podium, Arthur Fagen has appeared with internationally known orchestras including the Czech Philharmonic, Prague Spring Festival, Israel Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra della RAI di Torino, Orchestra del Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Bergen Philharmonic and Dutch Radio Orchestra, among many others.

Arthur Fagen has recorded for BMG, Bayerischer Rundfunk, SFB and WDR Cologne. He recorded many CDs for Naxos, including the 6 symphonies by Bohuslav Martinu and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies with the Staatskapelle Weimar, a CD with music by David Diamond, music by Henry Cowell with Bloomington Orchestra and 2 CDs with ORF Orchestra in Wien (music by Dawson, Kay, Gould).

M° Fagen is Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Jacobs School of Music of the Indiana University, where he has conducted in the last seasons Highway One by William Grant Stills, Die Zauberflöte, Parsifal, Hänsel und Gretel, Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Giovanni and Peter Grimes.
